Musicians: For Your Protection Against Bad Deals

Me I am not a shining example of success, but I have made lots of mistakes that you can learn from. I’ve also had a few deals before, as well as some bad ones.
I’m never afraid to stand my ground turn something down, or say no to anyone.
I’ve been pimping myself about on myspace, and had this strange “offer” to appear on a compilation.

Note: For those who are easily offended or are their friends, I’ll take out the name and edit this, but no matter which
way you look at, this isn’t a good deal. People always get upset when you say it isn’t good, always.

It’s your choice I guess, sign or don’t sign, ignore advice from a lawyer or from other people. I guess it’s a decision you have to make for yourself, but at least you know…

PLEASE NOTE: Please ignore me if you think I’m full of shit, it’s obvious that people think I am full of it. It’s my opinion and we’re not going to agree, so let’s just disagree. My instincts do not fail me, but according to everyone else I don’t know what I’m talking about, so I’m an arsehole, you do it your way, that’s your choice. You have freedom to ignore, but I stand by what I say.

Funny how the label I turned down in the US now has vanished… but I guess I was wrong about that as well, should have signed and gone down with a sinking ship.
Maybe some of you would have done that, again that’s your decision to weigh up and make your choice.
I’ve endured criticism and will carry on doing that, I’ve taken it right in the face and will carry on doing that, you can’t be involved in music and expect everything to be rosy.
Labels should not be excluded from that, I personally would never ever sign an artist to a label of mine, because I could never be arrogant enough to tell them I could do something for them. No one cares more about your art more than you, so you’re the best person to represent it, not me or anyone else.

Believe it or not I have some first hand experience to offer of this, that I wish someone had told me about.

But again you decide…

This is the message:

I APPROVED YOU CAUSE…;)

YOUR TUNES RULE. IN FACT, I’M DOING A SERIES OF COMPILATIONS ON MY LABEL AND I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A TRACK FROM YOU IF YOUR INTERESTED. HERE’S THE DETAILS:

I NEED A WAV FILE OF TRACK (PREFERABLY UNRELEASED OR NEW MATERIAL, BUT SINCE YOU RULE I WILL TAKE WHAT I CAN GET). BAND/ARTIST INFO AND TRACK INFO. A THANX LIST (OPTIONAL).

OUR REWARD:
THE COMPILATION WILL BE A -LIMITED EDITION- OF 400 COPIES CD. EACH ARTIST GETS 10-15 COPIES FREE. WITH 15-20 ARTISTS PER COMP YOU SEE THE MATH THAT LED TO 10-15 COPIES EACH. AFTER THAT, EACH ARTIST CAN GET MORE FROM ME, AT COST. YOU OWN YOUR MUSIC. I DISTRO IT AND FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO THE WONDERFUL MUSICIANS OF
THE WORLD. ALSO, IT DRAWS ATTENTION TO MY LABEL, YOUR WORK AND ONCE AGAIN, MAKES ME FEEL REALLY GREAT INSIDE TO POOL SO MANY HEARTS AND MINDS TOGETHER. THE PROFITS MADE FROM EACH DISC I SELL PERSONALLY, WILL GO INTO A SAVINGS FOR 7″ RELEASES WITH THE MANY ARTISTS ON THE
COMPS. BUT THAT IS A WHOLE OTHER EMAIL…

P.S. REALLY HOPE YOUR INTERESTED. IF YOU GET THE CHANCE, LET OTHER AWSOME MUSICIANS YOU KNOW, KNOW ABOUT THIS AS WELL. EITHER WAY I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON…

This smells, Bad, Bad, Bad. You can have CDs made on demand by Customflix now which is great for both DVD/CD, filmmakers and musicians. Cd Baby, (apparently this deal is better, eh?, challenge anyone to find an outfit better than CD Baby) although pretty slow, have widespread digital distribution, but all you have to do is give them a handful of copies (made yourself if u like), and they’ll farm it out for a few dollars.

So you don’t need anything like this offer, ONLY if that label already has a good profile that can do better things for your visibility. Even then you’re due some royalties, all though records and CD’s don’t make much on labels unless large numbers shift, think it’s more about exposure.

But it definitely is not : zero royalties, and you can buy your own CD’s after the first 20.
I wish people had told me what it’s like before, so I’m trying to give you a heads up now, hope it helps…

Stay strong and keep fighting…

PS Even the labels with big reputations offer bad deals, you need to get a lawyer to look at it first, but they would say the same thing exactly. It’s just not worth it.
If your lawyer says it’s a good deal, then he’s different from any advice I’ve ever had in 13 years, so you decide for yourself if this is worth it…
