Submerge Interview: Ron Murphy Master Record Cutter

May 18th by The Ghost That Walks | | View Comments

Ron Murphy (NSC) is an integral part of the Detroit Electronic sound.

He invented the backwards groove, locked groove, run out etching and gave it to the Detroit Electronic legends. The list of people he has mastered for is awesome: Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance,to name but a few. A lot of the records you will hear at DEMF will have been cut by him.

I was lucky enough to master some of my own stuff with Ron, and his advice was invaluable. Something I never got from Europe despite releasing on 3 different labels. I hope to get the chance to come back to Detroit to master some music with him again , and I just hope he has changed his mind about CDs.

My own 12" She’s Electric was pressed at Archers and mastered by Ron, people still like the way it sounds to this day.
Despite him telling me it "sounded like shit" when he first heard it, but his advice was better than anyone I’ve encountered so far. If I get the chance again, and I hope I do, I’d like him to cut every record.
